Animated movies

Animated movies are now treated as a serious artistic endeavour, with their own award categories at the Academy Awards (Oscars) since 2001, the Golden Globe Awards since 2007, and the BAFTA Awards since 2007. An animated movie, Beauty and the Beast, was nominated in the main Best Picture category in 1991, and in 2008 the animated feature Waltz with Bashir was nominated for Best Foreign Language Film.

And the Academy Award winners for Best Animated Feature are:

2002 - Spirited Away

2003 - Finding Nemo

2004 - The Incredibles

2005 - Wallace & Gromit: The Curse of the Were-Rabbit (the only claymation film on the list)

2006 - Happy Feet

2007 - Ratatouille

2008 - WALL-E

2009 - UP

3D animated movies hit the mainstream in 2009 with the DreamWorks blockbuster Monsters vs Aliens.

Mary and MaxDon't forget to see the latest feature length claymation animated movie Mary and Max by Academy Award winning Australian animator Adam Elliot.

The latest Disney Pixar animated movie is Toy Story 3. The 3D animated movie received great reviews, and in a year without many other blockbuster animated features it could be firming as favourite for an Academy Award in 2011.

Animated movies a big hit in summer 2010

The family blockbusters for the 2010 summer holidays in the United States included an unusually large number of animated features, making the most of new 3D techniques.

Disney Pixar's Toy Story 3 led the way with a massive $400+ million box office, with DreamWorks Animation following with two animated features - How to Train Your Dragon and Shrek Forever After. Universal's Despicable Me was also an animated hit. All four movies performed strongly outside the US as well.

"Tangled" is Disney's 3D animated movie for 2010

Disney Animation Studios has announced the title for its 2010 animated movie will no longer be called "Rapunzel" and will now be known as "Tangled". The character of Rapunzel will be voiced by Mandy Moore, and the animated movie is intended to be a modern re-imagining of the classic tale. The movie will have digital 3D effects, and is scheduled for release in November 2010.

The nominations for Animated Short Film are: French Roast, Granny O'Grimm's Sleeping Beauty, The Lady and the Reaper (La Dama y la Muerte), Logorama, A Matter of Loaf and Death.
